My "Painting Over Upholstery" Chair

I found this chair at an estate sale for $20 and new I could do something amazing with it but "channel" chairs are hard to upholster.  Then one day I came across this amazing blog www.hypheninteriors.com which shows that you can paint over upholstery with regular latex paint and a textile medium.  Yeehaw!

Materials needed:
1 Quart of latex satin paint in the color of your choice
1 Spray bottle full of water
1 2 inch or smaller paint brush
Fabric medium (equal to the amount of paint that you use)
Acrylic craft paint in the color of your choice (should match the color of the Latex paint)
Sand paper in around a 180 grit

By following Kristy's directions I managed to make this dated chair into one of my favorite re-done chairs in my home.  Go here for her tutorial:

I used a deep charcoal satin paint from my local hardware store

The old paint brush helped distribute the paint more evenly over the fabric and remember to paint the fabric with thin layers, don't glob it on.

This is how it looked after two coats and sanding the harder areas.
I painted the woodwork white, let it sit for a day then sanded the wood to give it that "chippy" finish.

This is the finished product and the little pillow I found at TJMaxx fit it perfectly!

    1. Did you ever end up painting your chairs? If so, how is it holding up? I’m getting ready to do mine and have been researching techniques. There is a fantastic YouTube with a velvet couch using DIY brand in a teal color. I bought some of that paint and have been experimenting on the excess upholstery I have cut away. I’m pleased with the results so far and the material is not hard at all. I did a lot of sanding with medium grit sanding block.

Many automotive trimmers now work either in automotive design or with aftermarket trim shops carrying out repairs, restorations or conversions for customers directly. A few high-quality motor car manufacturers still employ trimmers.

  21. Does the paint feel rough? Soft? Can it be washed incase if a spill or food soiling?

    1. I have a table from my grandma. I loved the design but I hated the color. So I never put it out in my main living areas. Then I read an article and she made so much sense. She was saying if you love a piece of furniture but not in love with it’s look. You need to make it your own. She loves it and she uses it and it pleases her. THAT is all that matters!

  24. I love the way the fabric retains it's beautiful texture. Texture on am individual piece of furniture (or overall in a room, that matter) adds interest and sophistication, without the tricky need to balance extra colors -- choosing a print, for example.
Very sophisticated! I can't wait to try this on the cotton velvet of my Victorian chair. Now, I just need to decide on a color. Which is something else that makes this technique so good -- you have the full spectrum of latex paint, instead of being limited by dye or fabric choices.
